Just a little over a week ago, the infamous ‘Emoji Movie’ trailer was released. This movie will be released in July 28th, and has seemed to gather a strongly negative reception from the public. Here are my own first impressions when watching ‘The Emoji Movie’ trailer for the first time.
Watching this trailer seemed to give me a sense of Déjà vu. The plot is almost the exact same of ‘Wreck-It-Ralph’. The reason I say this is because the main character lives in a digital world and does not fit in where he is supposed to and is not particularly accepted by the other characters around him. The plot of the movie is getting the main character to fit in and find a place in this digital world.
There is also a female sidekick in ‘The Emoji Movie’ that already accepts the main character for who he is, which would be the equivalent of Vanellope in Wreck-It-Ralph. Along with that is a male side character, who would seem to be in the place of Fix-It-Felix. ‘The Emoji Movie’ has seemed to take many aspects of ‘Wreck-It-Ralph’, such as the plot, and translate it into new characters and a similar setting.
This movie also favors ‘Inside Out.’ The idea of using characters that represent emotion and having one character that messes up his emotions, such as Sadness from ‘Inside Out’, is a very similar concept that has already been done. In my opinion, ‘The Emoji Movie’ takes elements from both ‘Wreck It Ralph’ and ‘Inside Out’ and combines them into one movie.
Seeing this trailer is like watching a movie that I have already seen. It did not seem that this movie brought anything new or original to the table. The plot, character roles, and style is borrowed from movies that have already been done. I wish there could have been an original plot with brand new elements that could truly make it a successful movie. However, this does not seem to be the case. A truly fair judgement can be made on the entire movie when it is fully released; however, the trailer is not showing much hope.
My conclusion is that ‘The Emoji Movie’ will be a movie that we have already seen. The idea seems to be washed up and reused at this point, so some originality in concept would have more than likely brought a more positive reception from viewers. However, only time what the end result of this movie will really be.
